Most yoga mats available out there are made out of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), a man-made material that is pretty durable but not biodegradable which isn’t very good for the environment. Many yogis have valid concerns about the environmental effects of the process on how PVC is being manufactured and about its safety for personal usage. A popular alternative which many others would choose would be the Natural rubber mats. They have the benefit of being made from a renewable resource and have a lot of loyal fans but they do have a few disadvantages.
They are quite heavy in weight, has a strong rubbery odour which many do not appreciate and are usually pretty hard in texture. Another option which many consider are mats made of another man-made material, TPE (thermoplastic elastomer).
In comparison to PVC and rubber, TPE is amazingly lightweight and offers soft yet firm support to the users and nicely patterned surfaces, which provide excellent traction on the mat. The most fitting description of TPE mats is cushy. Yoga practised on a TPE mat feels like practicing on a soft cloud in the sky.
It is a material that has the same recyclable properties as plastic, with the added advantage of being as elastic as rubber. As such, the product offers the best of both worlds in terms of both comfort for users and safety for the planet as a whole. As an added benefit, TPE requires very little additives in order for it to be useful in the production of things like yoga mats, which makes them a lot safer. It also means less energy has to be used in the creation of TPE products, once again protecting the environment as a whole.
Fuzzy Flex’s mats are made from TPE. Their mats are super lightweight and it feels like you are carrying a little feather around.
It’s intended for people who want a little extra padding between themselves and the floor. However, the downside is that with very thick mats, it can be a little destabilizing in balancing postures where your feet needs to have good contact with the ground.
